The Subject of the Whole Universe

“Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The LORD, the LORD [I Am, I Am], the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to [the thousandth generation], and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin…’ ” (Exodus 34:5-7)

What is God like? God’s declaration of His ‘Name’ to Moses was His revelation of who He really is. God is as God does, the ancient Jews used to say. Moses wanted to see God, so God told Moses what He does—and that’s what He’s like. He is “the superlative of everything good you choose to call Him”, Rev. Lockwood preached. Have we thought about what we’re saying—Who we’re calling upon—when we call on the Name of the Lord? When you’ve gotten into trouble—perhaps fearful of what God will do or think as we go under for the third time, remember His Name. As you tread the waters of the Sea of Him, seeking to stay afloat—remember He is the sea in which He intended us to drown.

Call on His Name—you will not be disappointed. This is the God who comes to the rescue, this is the God who is already here.
